This view of the southeast corner of First Avenue and Spring Street in downtown Seattle features the Holyoke Building (also known as the Holyoke Block). Richard Holyoke (1836-1905) commissioned the architectural firm of Bird and Dornbach to design the building, which was completed in 1890, one the first to be finished after the Great Seattle Fire. The Holyoke Building housed many social and artistic clubs and organizations; as early as 1895 it housed the Conservatory of Arts on the top floor. A number of studios operated on the second and third floors, including that of Nellie Centennial Cornish (1876-1956), founder of the Cornish College of the Arts. Following a 1975 restoration the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and became a City of Seattle Landmark in 1978.
