The nation’s first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910. Its founder hoped to start a national celebration for fathers similar to Mother’s Day. In 1913, Seattle businessman Herbert A. Schoenfeld formed a Dad’s Day Association, with a similar purpose. The city’s Dad’s Day took place on July 19, 1913. Its official song and two-step, “Poor Underappreciated Dad”, was performed at Seattle’s Clemmer Theater during the city’s summer Potlatch festival.
The words and music for “Poor Underappreciated Dad” were written by Katherine Cook Johnson of Seattle and printed at Seattle Music Printing House. The score was published by the Dad's Day Association, Herbert A. Schoenfeld, President, J.H. Dreher, Secretary.
