Mary Ann Wells founded the dance department at Seattle's Cornish School of the Arts (now Cornish College of the Arts) and taught there for seven years. Sometime around 1920, she started her own dance school, which operated until 1958. Robert Joffrey and many other prominent dancers graduated from the Mary Ann Wells School of the Dance.

The School's Eleventh Annual Dance Festival took place at Seattle's Metropolitan Theatre in July 1927. The program lists the dances, dancers, faculty, staff, and production information. Lillian Goon, daughter of Chinese Consul Goon Dip, was one of the performers. A portrait of Wells appears on the front cover; the back cover has eight small images of dance school graduates who were then working in and around New York City.
