By 1878, Seattle had over 2,000 residents. Shown here is the area bounded by Pike and Union Streets and Second and Third Streets (now Avenues), some distance north of the town's active lumber mill and commercial district. The large building in the upper left is the Territorial University, founded in 1861. Only a few of the area's big trees remain in the distance.
