Sometime around 1900, the Northern Pacific Railroad built several piers along the Seattle waterfront. The Arlington Dock Company operated two of these at the foot of Seneca Street. The company was an agent for steamships traveling along the Pacific Coast to Alaska, Asia and Europe.
This image of the Seattle waterfront shows Arlington Dock Piers 4 (right) and 5 (left), with the Seattle skyline in the background. Several large steamships are tied up between the piers, along with a smaller white vessel, possibly part of the region's "Mosquito Fleet."
