Ray Daughters was a swim instructor at the Crystal Natatorium in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood, and later at the Washington Athletic Club, where Daughters worked after the facility opened in 1930. Daughters’ two most famous swimmers were Seattleites Helene Madison and Jack Medica, the USA’s top freestylers in the 1932 and 1936 Olympics respectively. This photo is from a scrapbook of clippings and photos kept by Helene Madison from her high school swimming days, prior to her great success at the 1932 Summer Olympics, where Daughters coached the US Olympic team.
