Julean Herbert Arnold was a U. S. Commercial Attache in China and Japan from 1914-1940, and a founder of the China Club in Seattle. Established in 1916, the China Club of Seattle still operates today and is committed to promoting closer trade and cultural relations with China. In 1923, Mr. Arnold spent four months touring the United States, including Seattle, before he returned to his duties in China. He met with students at Roosevelt, Broadway, and Queen Anne High Schools, members of the Federated Women's Clubs, and was a guest of the China Club and Admiral Oriental Line at a luncheon on the steamship "President Grant."
This panoramic photograph shows sixty-six attendees of the China Club luncheon on the deck of the S.S. "President Grant," part of the Admiral Line (also American Mail Line, and later Admiral Oriental Line), a steamship company based in Seattle that operated five ocean liners sailing from Seattle to Japan and China.
