Lumber was one of the Puget Sound's main exports in the 1890s. In 1899, 200,000 board feet of milled lumber left Seattle every day by rail or ship for the eastern United States and various Pacific ports.
Snoqualmie Falls Lumber Company began operations in 1917. The company, starting with some houses and a mill store, built a small community atop Snoqualmie Falls, adding a community center in 1918, and in 1920, the 50-bed Snoqualmie Falls Hospital. In 1948, Snoqualmie Falls Lumber was bought by Weyerhaeuser Company.
In 1913, Clark Kinsey and his brother Darius began more than 30 years of photographic work documenting the area's logging industry for lumber companies. They worked independently, with Clark primarily covering the area south of Seattle and Darius mainly working to the north. This panoramic image shows the lumber yard at the Snoqualmie Falls Lumber Company, but it is unclear which Kinsey brother photographed this panorama, because they often overlapped locations.
