In 1957, recent UW School of Architecture graduate Barry Upson was hired to work on the Seattle civic center project. After his two month contract ended, Upson stayed on to work on the Seattle World's Fair, becoming Ewen Dingwall's executive assistant. As the march toward the fair progressed, Upson bore increasingly important duties, becoming manager of the fair's New York office and eventually director of domestic exhibits.
