"The $350,000 Seattle International Fountain is described as a 'marriage of space age technology and classic simplicity.' In the background the 600-foot World's Fair Space Needle towers as further evidence of the space age."
The fountain was designed by Japanese architects Kazuyuki Matsushita and Hideki Shimizu. Its domed shape and bowl lined with white rock chips were said to resemble a rocky plain on a distant, unexplored asteroid. The spiky nozzles and rocks were removed in a later renovation, making it much more people-friendly.
