In 1883, when Seattle's small schools were bursting with students, a building was built to consolidate students at one larger facility at Sixth Street and Madison Avenue. This school, now referred to as Central School II, housed Seattle High School (later Senior Grammar School) on the top floor while the younger students attended classes on the lower two floors. In 1902, a separate Seattle High School opened (later Broadway High School) on Capitol Hill, a remnant of which still stands as part of the Seattle Central Community College's Broadway Performance Hall.
The "Record of Deportment and Scholarship" pictured here was issued to Senior Grammar School student Sara Eliza Atkinson (1879-1966) on April 2, 1896. A printed letter to parents is stamped with the signature of Edwin Twitmyer (1854-1931), principal of the school from 1891-1904. In 1902 Sara Atkinson married Julius Webster Augustine (1879-1953), son of prominent local businessman, Manuel Brock Augustine (1844-1922). Sara and Julius had three children: Webster Augustine (1904-1994), Morton Bradford Augustine (1910-1975), and Elizabeth Bradford (Augustine) McMullen (1918-2006).
