Order an ImageThe University of Washington played its first-ever football game on Thanksgiving Day, 1889, at the Jefferson Street Park, just east of downtown. In the next decade the university moved to its present site five miles north of downtown, and football games were moved to old Denny Field on the northwest corner of the campus near 45th Street.
According to a note written on the back of the photo, this image was taken during a game played on Thanksgiving Day, November 18, 1911, at Denny Field. The Huskies did play on November 18, 1911, however the game took place at Multnomah Field in Portland against the University of Oregon Webfoots (UW won 29-3). If the location is correct in the image, then the date is more likely to be November 4, 1911, when the Huskies played the Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University) Aggies (UW won 34–0). The 1911 University of Washington football team was coached by "Gloomy" Gil Dobie (1908-1916) and captained by William Jennings "Wee" Coyle (1888-1977), to achieve a record of 7-0-0.
