The University of Washington played its first-ever football game on Thanksgiving Day, 1889, at the Jefferson Street Park, just east of downtown. In the next decade the university moved to its present site five miles north of downtown, in a wooded area bordering Lake Washington. Football games were played at old Denny Field on the northwest corner of the campus near 45th Street.

In this image the coaches, managers, and players of the 1910 University of Washington Football Team pose together outside, probably on campus or at Denny Field. The team pictured here contributed to Husky Football's streak of 63 consecutive games without a defeat, which as of 2008, remains a NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) record.

Identified in the image as the furthest man to the left wearing a suit is coach "Gloomy" Gil Dobie (1908-1916), notable for never losing a game in his nine seasons at Washington. The player holding the football is captain Huber "Polly" Grimm, standing next to his younger brother Warren Grimm. William Jennings "Wee" Coyle (1888-1977), tenth from the left in this photograph, was the only quarterback to play four years without losing a game. He also lettered in baseball and track, and is honored in the University Hall of Fame in all three sports; he later served as Lieutenant Governor of Washington State from 1921-1925. Other players identified in the image are Melville Mucklestone, Tracy Baker, Fred Sparger, and Billy Cook.
