This image of the construction of the temporary Naval Training Station on the University of Washington campus was taken on October 8, 1918. The two buildings in the background were built for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909; the Washington State Building is on the right edge of the frame, with the Forestry Building is directly behind.
The training camp was built by Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging Company (later Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company), a major contributor to the construction of the Pacific Northwest. Many of their projects were documented by Frank H. Nowell, a noted Seattle photographer whose shadow can be seen at the bottom of the frame.
