Carson Dobbins Boren (1824-1912) arrived in Seattle in 1851 as part of the group of White settlers known as the Denny party. He built a cabin at what is now the corner of Second and Cherry in downtown Seattle. Mr. Boren served as King County's first sheriff and also helped explore wagon routes over the Cascades. He preferred a solitary life, so as Seattle grew, he sold his centrally-located land and moved to what is now part of Woodinville.
This certificate grants a Survivor's Pension to Second Sergeant Carson D. Boren, who served in Captain Lander's Co. A, 2 Regiment, Washington Territory, as a Mounted Volunteer, and authorizes a pension of $8.00 per month beginning June 27, 1902. The pension was issued by the United States Department of the Interior Bureau of Pensions for Mr. Boren's participation in the "Indian Wars," a collective name for a series of armed conflicts that took place during the 1850s in the Pacific Northwest between White settlers and several groups of Indigenous peoples, brought on by the expanding colonization of the North American continent by the United States government.
