The University of Washington opened on November 4, 1861, as the Territorial University of Washington on a 10 acre site in Seattle donated by Arthur and Mary Denny, Edward Lander, and Charlie and Mary Terry, about where the Fairmont Olympic Hotel stands today. In 1895 the growing university relocated to the current campus north of downtown. This studio portrait of alumni from the first class of students of the Territorial University was taken as part of the University's semi-centennial celebrations held from November 3-8, 1911.
