This jacket belonged to Tom Takashi Kitano (1929-2019) who worked as a controller for Puget Sound Freight Lines. Kitano began working at Puget Sound Freight after he graduated from the University of Washington. Except for the two years when he was drafted into the United States Army as part of the 10th Mountain Division Artillery, Kitano spent his entire career with the shipping and transport company. Puget Sound Freight started in 1919 as part of Seattle’s “Mosquito Fleet” of small ships shuttling cargo around Seattle. In the 1950s, when Kitano began working for the company, it had expanded substantially into a land and sea service of ships and cargo trucks. This jacket is from around the time of his retirement in the 1990s. It was made by Port Authority, a Seattle-based company founded in 1994. Port Authority is a “private label” company, which means it makes apparel and accessories that other companies can order and put their own logos on to create uniforms, employee giveaways, or other promotional products.
