First Pike Place Market busker's permit button, 1976
Musician Randy Bowles began busking in the Pike Place Market in 1974 after moving from his hometown of Yakima, WA. In late 1975, Pike Place Public Market notified it buskers that permits would be required to perform at the Market as of January 1, 1976. The Market staff would issue buttons as proof that a permit had been purchased. Bowles was a favorite with staff, so when he visited the office to pay for his permit he found that they had saved button #1 for him.
