Hotel Butler was located in Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square neighborhood at the corner of Second Avenue and James Street. Construction began soon after the Great Seattle Fire of 1889 and opened in 1894. It was managed by German immigrants Dietrich Hamm and Ferdinand Schmitz. The hotel was grand and hosted famous guests, including presidents Grover Clevland, William McKinley, and Theodore Roosevelt. The famed “Rose Room” was a go-to spot for drinks and dancing, and during Prohibition it was frequently cited for violations of the law. The hotel closed in 1933 and the building was reduced in size to just two floors with shops at street level. Today those lower two floors remain as part of Butler garage. "If Carried Away Return Unsealed By Mail Postage 2 Cents" is stamped on the fob.Thus the reason there is a 2 cent stamp adhered to the back.
