The Third Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) was held in Seattle from November 30 to December 3, 1999. Tens of thousands of activists for many causes gathered to protest what they saw as the WTO's favoring of corporate interests over social and environmental concerns. Heavy police response included the use of riot gear, tear gas, and rubber bullets. Local artist, William Werrbach (b. 1925), painted a series of artworks depicting three days of the confrontation between protesters and police officers.This work features the peaceful march by labor union organizations escorted by Seattle motorcycle police as they marched through downtown, circled the Kingdome, and ended in Westlake Mall. Werrbach was born in Seattle and studied art with professors at the University of Washington and Cornish School. He is known for being a prolific painter, graphic designer, teacher, and lecturer, and he has won many regional and national awards for his work.
