Joe Rantz's German-made USA flag from the Berlin Olympics, 1936
Joseph Harry Rantz (1914–2007) was on the University of Washington crew team that won the Olympic gold medal in the men's eight at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. He was born in Spokane and experienced a very harsh childhood, basically living by himself through high school. Despite these hardships, he succeeded in gaining admission to the UW where he joined the now legendary 1936 crew team. He must have obtained this flag as a souvenir while at the Berlin Olympics.
