Bill Nye (b. 1955) grew up in Washington D.C. and studied mechanical engineering at Cornell University. He moved to Seattle in the late 1970s to work for Boeing and later Sundstrand Data Control. While working as an engineer, he also became interested in standup and the local comedy scene. In the 1980s Nye worked as a writer and performer on the King5 TV comedy show Almost Live! and it was there he started doing comedic science demonstrations as “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” During this time, he was also an avid bicyclist and participated in the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic (STP) several times. The STP started in 1979 as a bicycle race but became a recreational ride in 1981. This bag is from 1989, one of the biggest years for the STP when 10,000 riders took part.
