NASA flight suit worn by Bill Nye, ca. 1997

Bill Nye (b. 1955) wore NASA jumpsuit in the “Space Exploration” episode of his groundbreaking science education TV show “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” The right shoulder has a “Teacher in Space” patch, which is a program started in 1984 with the aim of honoring educators and inspiring students about space exploration. The program was discontinued in 1990 following the Challenger disaster and the death of teacher Christa McAuliffe. This episode aired in 1997 and so the program was not active at the time, but perhaps NASA still felt the patch was in the spirit of Nye’s educational mission. “Bill Nye the Science Guy” was produced and filmed in Seattle from 1993-1999, although many scenes from this episode were filmed at a NASA facility in Florida.
