Gertrude outfit from J.P. Patches show, ca. 1970-2000
The J.P. Patches Show aired on KIRO-TV in Seattle from 1958-1981 and broadcast over 10,000 episodes in its 23-year run. Chris Wedes (1928-2012) portrayed the clown J. P. Patches (Julius Pierpont Patches) who was Mayor of the city dump. Bob Newman (1932-2020) played a variety of characters including Gertrude, J.P.'s girlfriend. Gertrude’s outfits usually included a robe, a colorful dress, shoes or boots, a red wig made from a mop, and often a handmade crown. Even after the show was off the air, Wedes and Newman made frequent public appearances as J.P. and Gertrude. Parts of this costume may have been created for these post-show appearances, but the bathrobe is older and almost certainly original to the TV show.
