This “Up Down” switch was a prop from the Jet Guy sketch on the Seattle comedy show Almost Live! The show aired from 1984 to 1999 on KING5 television in Seattle. In its earliest years, Almost Live! was like a local version of the Tonight Show, but in 1989 the format changed to be a 30-minute sketch comedy show. Jet Guy was a parody of low-budget 1950s superhero TV shows and was shown in black and white. Jet Guy flew with the help of a green screen, went invisible with editing, and was replaced with a dummy for the inevitable crash landing or explosion. Jet Guy’s “real” identity was Guy Morris, an insurance actuary. Morris/Jet Guy was played by the show’s Director of Photography and editor Ralph Bevins, who also produced the “Jet Guy” sketches. This switch, along with Jet Guy’s homemade cardboard helmet and a styrofoam jet pack, were made by Almost Live! cast member Bill Nye. In the very first Jet Guy episode, Nye plays a scientist who is explaining the features of the new jet suit, including this “Up Down” switch for flying. Morris immediately tests the “up” switch and blasts through the ceiling. The “Up Down" switch remained a part of the costume for subsequent installments of the sketch.
