Almost Live! was a Seattle comedy show which aired from 1984 to 1999 on KING5 in Seattle. In the first season, host Ross Shafer and the staff tried to come up with publicity stunts to get more attention for the show. In 1985 Shafer announced a campaign to change the Washington State Song from “Washington my Home” to “Louie, Louie.” The song wasn’t written in Washington, but Seattle R&B band-leader Dave Lewis was one of the first musicians to adopt and popularize the song, and Tacoma band The Wailers was one of the first groups to record it. The Wailers version featured the fuzzy “garage rock” sound that has been called a precursor to punk and grunge. Shafer’s campaign caught on, and on April 12, 1985, about 5,000 people rallied at the State Capitol for “Louie, Louie Day.” The bid to change the song failed but got the press attention Shafer wanted.
