Wallet and coins that once belonged to Morgan James Carkeek, ca. 1866

According to a note in this wallet written by his daughter, Guendolen Carkeek Pleetscheeff, Morgan James Carkeek arrived in the United States at 19 years of age with just a few coins and "high hopes." An 1866 six pence and circa 1880 Japanese Rin were the two coins found in the wallet. Morgan Carkeek (1852-1926), a stone mason originally from England, settled in Seattle in 1870 and began building a construction and real estate empire. Mr. Carkeek and his wife, Emily (Gaskill) Carkeek (1852-1926), donated the land for Seattle's Carkeek Park. Deeply interested in conservation and the study of Seattle-area history, in 1911 the Carkeeks founded the Seattle Historical Society, which later, with the help of their daughter Guendolen (1892-1994), established the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI).
