Spacie the Needle was created by Brian Keil when he entered an "International Mascot Contest" promoted by the Seattle Mariners baseball team and held in the Kingdome in 1979. This 12-foot tall costume consists of a Space Needle headpiece, white Mariners jersey and long white pants, and 4-foot stilts, making it one of the tallest in the mascot world. There were about twenty entries in the contest including but limited to: Sammy the Salmon on roller skates, a Bulgarian acrobat dressed as a rabbit, Pelican Pete, and something called "Baby" in which a grown man crawled around on the ground. Spacie won the mascot contest and proceeded to entertain fans at various venues throughout the 1980s including Mariners games, Seafair parades, local celebrations, festivals, as well as charity and children's events.
