International News cotton tote, ca. 1989
International News was a Seattle-based brand, founded in 1983 by brothers Raj and Akhil Shah and Mike Alesko. It was known for bold, screen-printed graphics, often featuring the “International News” branded text. The donor of this bag bought it around 1989 from Zebraclub, the retail store on 1st Avenue owned by the International News team and used as a “laboratory” to test out new designs. She used it as a bookbag while attending Franklin High School. The Shahs were also founders and owners of Shah Safari. During this period, they had offices is Bombay (Mumbai), London, Hong Kong, Nairobi, Nepal and Bangladesh.
