These “pep buttons” belonged to a donor who attended Rainier Beach High School from 1968 to 1971. They were shared among students to create excitement around sports games and beating other schools in the district. This collection includes all the Seattle Public High Schools at the time (Ballard, Cleveland, Franklin, Garfield, Ingraham, Lincoln, Nathan Hale, Chief Sealth, Queen Anne, Roosevelt, and West Seattle) as well as Shoreline High School. They feature slogans like “Clobber Cleveland” and “Intimidate Ingraham,” and many reference mascots in messages like “Bulldoze the Bulldogs” (Garfield) and “Jinx the Lynx” (Lincoln). At the time, West Seattle High School’s mascot was the Indians, and so buttons for that school include shocking phrases “Scalp the Indians” and “Singe the Injuns.” Among the playful and humorous tone of the other buttons, these stand out as glaring examples of the harm created when Native people are used as sports mascots. West Seattle changed their mascot to the Wildcats in 2002.
