Green agate, gold, and topaz bi-disc necklace from Boma Jewelry, 2021

Boma is a jewelry company founded in Seattle in 1981 by Boon and Chieko Chaya. In earlier years of the company’s history, Boma’s marketing and designs rarely highlighted the founders’ Asian heritage, as was common in the jewelry industry at the time. Since becoming CEO in 2016, second-generation owner Suzanne Vetillart has led the company in a new direction. Boma now more publicly embraces the family’s Japanese, Thai, and Chinese heritage, as well as celebrating the artisans that produce the jewelry in the company’s factory in Thailand. This necklace is from Boma’s “Treasured Collection” line which was introduced in 2021. It uses the bi-disc shape which has been present in Chinese art for millennia and is a symbol of longevity and the continuous circle of life. A portion of the proceeds from the Treasured Collection went to the AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) Community Fund.
