Casey McNerthney was issued this football jersey as a freshman at Bishop Blanchet High School in 1995. The freshmen jerseys that year had been varsity jerseys from the previous year, so they felt imbued with a sense of importance for the new players. It was also the last year that Blanchet put “Braves” on the football jerseys. In the early 1990s the school completed a review of their moniker and while they decided to keep the “Braves” name, they removed any Native American caricatures or symbols and used alternatives like the school acronym or a large “B” instead. The jerseys the next year said “BHS” instead of “Braves.” The school revisited the issue in 2020 and decided to fully retire the “Braves” moniker in 2021. In 2022 the school officially became the Bishop Blanchet Bears.
