Souvenir jacket purchased during Vietnam War service, 1969
Art Ditzel grew up in Skyway and Des Moines and graduated from Mt. Rainier High School in 1965. He joined the Navy that same year and served until 1969. He was stationed on the Kawishiwi AO-146 which was an oiler and ammunition supply ship. During the Vietnam War the ship spent most of her time in the Tokin Gulf refueling ships and taking empty shell casings from the guns on the destroyers and cruisers. During Ditzel’s service, Kawishiwi AO-146 went to Hong Kong twice, staying about 4 or 5 days each time. Many of the crew bought these jackets as souvenirs. The inclusion of the US flag, plus the list of locations that were common ports for most Navy ships at the time, suggests that the makers in Hong Kong designed these specifically to sell to US servicemembers.
