C.C. Maring came to Seattle around 1890 and established the first photo engraving and printing business west of the Mississippi. His first shop was Maring & Ladd, then a man named Blake who worked at the shop, bought into it, and it became Maring & Blake. The business was located on the floor above the Crescent Manufacturing Company at the corner of Jackson Street and Occidental Avenue, near Pioneer Square. Maring was also an artist and MOHAI has two of his works including a watercolor of Kikisoblu (Princess Angeline) painted in 1892 and an oil painting entitled, "Moonlight on the Columbia," 1897.
