University of Washington basketball, 1896
The University of Washington had their first season of men's basketball in 1896 which consisted of just two games. The UW lost to the Seattle Athletic Club 2-3 in overtime, but beat the Seattle Y.M.C.A. (score not recorded). Basketball was invented in 1891, and these early games did not have high scoring results. The ball was thrown into a fruit basket and the game would have to stop until a ladder was brought on court to retrieve the ball. After some time, the bottoms of the fruit baskets were removed for efficiency and ease of play.
