On November 21, 2000, staff at both of Seattle's major newspapers, The Seattle Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, went on strike. Though the papers were owned separately, both striking groups were represented by the Communication Workers of Americas (CWA) Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild Local 37082. At issue were wage increases for employees of both newspapers and changes to the P-I pension plan. After U.S Senator Patty Murray helped provide a federal mediator, the parties met and negotiated in Washington, D.C. The Post-Intelligencer workers settled on December 28, 2000, and the Times workers on January 9, 2001.
