Ome Daiber (1907-1989) was known as the “Father of Mountain Rescue.” His interest in mountain equipment led him to found Ome Daiber Inc. in 1936. Some of his most well-known inventions were the two-legged “Penguin” sleeping bag, the “Birdcage” crampon, and “SnoSeal” waterproofing compound. He also manufactured Eddie Bauer’s first down jackets, before Bauer had his own factory. When World War II began he partnered with Harry Jensen to form the Daiber-Jensen Company. This outfit was manufactured in Seattle and is stamped “USAA” for use by the United States Army Air Forces. During the war, down feathers were reserved for the war effort, so garments like this were allowed to be made with down. But for commercial products Daiber-Jensen also developed a down alternative called Jen-so-lite.
