This tennis sweater was issued to Goodwill Games volunteer Michael D. Evans. The Goodwill Games ran from July 20 to August 5, 1990 in Seattle and were a huge undertaking for the city. Conceived by Ted Turner as an apolitical alternative to the Olympics, the games promised international goodwill through world-class competition. Over 2,000 athletes from 54 countries competed in 21 sports events at the University of Washington and other cities in Washington State. Dr. Evans worked at Group Health which provided medical staffing for the games. He was assigned to the sailing venue at Shilshole and fortunately had no serious injuries to treat. The weather was warm, so he likely never wore the sweater for his duties, but clearly the organizers knew enough about the fickleness of Seattle temperatures to plan for a cool-weather option.
