Olympia Brewing was founded in 1896 by German immigrant Leopold F. Schmidt (1846-1914) as the Capital Brewing Company in Tumwater, Washington. In 1902, the firm's secretary, Frank Kenney, came up with the long-used slogan "It's the Water" to promote their beer brewed with water from artesian wells. Through a series of consolidations, the company was acquired by Pabst Brewing Company in 1999. The Tumwater brewery was closed in 2003, however as of 2018 the Olympia brand continues, brewed by MillerCoors in southern California.
