Pin, "vote yes market," 1971
The Pike Place Market is one of the oldest continuously operated farmers' markets in the US. Local farmers, craftspeople and merchants have travelled to the market and set up shop for over one hundred years. In 1963, Seattle City Council proposed razing the Pike Place Market in hopes of obtaining federal urban renewal funds. Opponents to the demolition banded together in organizations to "Save the Market." Fundraisering activities included concerts, and selling shopping bags, cookbooks and buttons. After an eight year battle, the Market was saved by Initiative No. 1 on November 2, 1971.
