Dixy Lee Ray (1914–1994) was Washington's first female governor from 1976 to 1980, but did not win re-election as she lost in the Democratic primary election to Senator Jim McDermott who went on to lose in the general election to Republican John D. Spellman. Prior to being Governor, Ray was appointed by Richard Nixon to chair the US Atomic Energy Commission in 1973 - the only woman to serve as chair of the AEC.
