The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (AYPE) was held in Seattle in 1909 on what are now the grounds of the University of Washington. It was a major national event for the young but fast growing city. The original owner of this pin, Irene Ashby, attended the Exposition when she was a girl and purchased this pin as a souvenir. Henry William Seward (1801-1872) was Secretary of State from 1860-1869 and was involved in the purchase of Alaska in 1867.
