Carving pinewood derby cars and competing in races have long been a traditional pastime for the Royal Ranger Boys and the Missionettes (now the National Girls Ministries). Jim Smith, a local pinewood derby enthusiast, supported these organizations by helping the youngsters make their own derby cars, and he hand-carved this toy car, along with four others in the collection. For competition, there are strict rules for how the cars can be made including the size, weight, and what elements may be included. Parents may help in the creation but the child must do at least 50% of the work. The trick is to make the cars as streamlined as possible, and weights may be added to help increase speed as long as the overall weight doesn't exceed 5.5 ounces.
