Square grand Hallett & Allen piano, ca. 1847-1850
This piano was owned by Antoinette Josephine Baker, an original Mercer Girl who arrived in Seattle in 1864 at the age of 26 to teach at the newly established Territorial University. The Mercer Girls was the name given to the group of women recruited by Asa Mercer to journey to Seattle where there were a plethora of men but very few women, and the growing number of school age children called for a desperate need for teachers. The promise of work and good wages encouraged the women of Lowell, Massachusetts, to embark on this journey. The first group to leave the East coast consisted of eleven women between the ages of 15 and 35, and two men who were fathers accompanying their daughters. This piano that Antoinette brought with her was made by Hallett & Allen, one of the many names attributed to the long established Boston-based piano company, Hallett & Davis.
