Among the local designers and artists who began making face masks in 2020, many Black designers were inspired to infuse powerful messages into their creations. This mask was made by local milliner and clothing designer Sonia Wooten-Gill whose line is called FayeWoo’s Signature Collection. "I Can't Breathe" were the last words of Eric Garner, a Black man who died in 2014 because he was held in a chokehold by a police officer. The phrase became a slogan for the Black Lives Matter movement as it represented both the grave circumstances experienced by Garner, and the crushing weight of racism experience more broadly by Black Americans. The words were then also spoken by George Floyd who was murdered in 2020 in a similar manner-- by a police officer kneeling on his neck. "I Can't Breathe" again became a rallying cry, and was a fitting slogan for masks worn by protesters protesting during the COVID-19 pandemic.
