Green crate from Mountain View Berries, 2019

Mohinder “Moe” Sangha, owner of Mountain View Berries, is now one of dozens of Sikh berry farmers in Whatcom County. The community was much smaller when he first leased acres for raspberries back in 1981. Prior to living in the Pacific Northwest, Moe farmed in India’s Punjab region. Despite its struggles, he sees Mountain View Berries as an opportunity. As the Sangha family farm grew, they needed the help of a packing facility. But in 1990, area facilities refused to accept their product—likely an act of discrimination at the time. With no way to pack it, the harvest rot. The following year, Moe started the first Indian American-owned packing facility in the county.
