The Lowman & Hanford Company, established around 1885, was a printing company and retail stationery business operating in Seattle's Pioneer Square. This drafting kit, sold by Lowman & Hanford and owned by Percy Kendall, was a cherished item for Percy's granddaughter Barbara Elizabeth "Liz" Kendall. Percy Kendall (1891-1940) received his engineering degree from the University of Washington and followed his father into wharfbuilding at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Percy built piers in many places including Keyport Torpedo Station, Sitka, and Dutch Harbor, Alaska. The kit was passed down to Liz Kendall (b. 1937) and she had ambitions to be a drafter herself, even working at Boeing for a brief period, until she tired of the "secretarial" duties assigned to her as a woman. Nonetheless, she has used her engineering nature to design many items for her children and grandchildren including tents, jeans, quilts, and hats.
