This type of protective cover was issued to soldiers protect them from chemical gas attacks. After unfolding, the bag-like cover with a window insert, would serve to cover the individual, as well as his or her weapon and equipment. The protective cover was issued often issued with gas masks and was intended to be used only once. Individuals may have stored these cover packs with their survival kits during the cold war era when there was a threat of gas or chemical attack on civilians.
