The Firland Sanatorium opened in 1911 and was Seattle's municipal tuberculosis treatment center. Once located in Shoreline, Firland was originally called Henry Sanatorium. Horace Henry, a railroad magnate, donated 34 acres of land and money to build the sanatorium. Though it was known as the tuberculosis hospital, Firland treated all types of patients. The hospital closed in 1973 as the tuberculosis epidemic in Washington state was winding down, and Firland patients were sent to the Mountain View Hospital in Tacoma.
