In 1980, physicist and mountaineer Ron Gregg found himself in a perilous situation on Alaska’s Denali. Gregg’s climbing partner suffered frostbite and was airlifted out, all due to poorly designed gaiters—an accessory that covers the ankle and lower leg. After the well-planned trip was derailed by one failed accessory, Gregg created a solution: the foot-insulating X-Gaiter. Gregg launched Seattle-based Outdoor Research (OR) the following year. The X-Gaiter secures to the foot with crossed cords, forming an X.
